About
I lead music production studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, where I work closely with undergraduate and postgraduate students. I further support artists privately through tailored creative development sessions. Much of my teaching and mentoring is grounded in my ongoing work developing creative pedagogies and curriculum that centre practice and process. I hold a doctorate in creative practice-based research, with a focus on concept album making.
As a “bedroom producer” myself, I’ve navigated many of the same challenges faced by the artists I now support – including the lack of space for creative and critical exchange, and the uncertainty around building a sustainable practice. That sense of isolation and trial-and-error taught me the value of having a trusted space for creative reflection – something I now aim to offer to the artists I work with. Through this, I’ve developed an approach that emphasises dialogue, experimentation and artist-led development. My own background in sampling and in merging songwriting with production is informed by an interest in intimacy, imperfection and conceptual approaches to electronic music making – interests that often shape the kinds of conversations I have with the artists I support.
Outside of academia, I make music under the name Semi Precious. My work as a singer-producer has been featured by The Guardian, The Sunday Times, BBC Radio, Channel 4, i-D and Electronic Sound Magazine, and I’ve collaborated on performances with Museum of the Home in Hoxton and Soho House. I also co-founded Squareglass, and over the past few years have secured funding from organisations including Arts Council England, the Department for International Trade, Deutsche Bank, Lloyds Bank, Santander and Goldsmiths University’s Annual Fund – supporting both my own projects and initiatives developed with other independent artists.
